Wedding Photography at Tullyveery House, County Down

Our tips from behind the scenes…

We've photographed a number of times at Tullyveery House since 2012 when it started to do weddings. In that time, the team have perfected a seamless wedding experience and we always love working here.

Tullyveery is a Georgian country house set among the rolling drumlins of County Down, with views out towards the Mourne Mountains. It has a slightly formal, elegant feel - but the gardens soften that into something relaxed and welcoming. It's the kind of venue that nods to tradition without being bound by it.

Photo spots

The avenue leading up to the house is one of our favourites before you've even started - a winding tunnel of mature beech trees, with wildflower lawns either side. From there, the variety is genuinely excellent. The Summer House Garden is a walled, sheltered space that turns pink, blue and white with rhododendrons in early summer. Nearby, a yellow laburnum tree cascades with flowers through May, framing the gateway into the main walled garden, which tends to be used for speeches.

The Georgian house itself is where the couple gets ready, which makes for beautiful morning light, and the front rooms and formal dining room give you somewhere different to shoot - a bit of structure and formality if that suits the couple. The front of the house adds yet another backdrop. We love that everything here is rooted in the landscape rather than requiring a drive somewhere else; guests can simply wander the gardens and find their own favourite spots.

In the evening, the courtyard with its firepit is a particular highlight - atmospheric, warm, a great place for photos once the light has gone. And if you want something different, the staff will take you out across the fields in a 4x4 to the lake. Ten minutes there and back, and it gives a couple a few quiet moments to themselves, wrapped in blankets, away from everyone - which is lovely for us to photograph as well.

Light

The grounds give you a real mix of covered and open light. Mature trees provide dappled, open shade, so there's always somewhere sheltered whatever the weather is doing. The front lawn and the drinks reception garden are wide open and work well in full sun. The backdrop of the drumlins tends to look good in whatever light shows up on the day.

Weather

Tullyveery has a genuine Plan A, B and C built in, since you have exclusive use of the entire property. We've photographed ceremonies on the front lawn looking over the drumlins, and equally we've used the indoor spaces when the weather hasn't cooperated. Some couples have a church ceremony beforehand and use Tullyveery purely for the reception. Whatever happens with the weather, a wet day here never feels like a compromise - there are more options here than most venues can offer.

The vibe

Couples who choose Tullyveery tend to want something classy and relaxed - a nod to tradition, reinvented in their own way. The venue is extremely well run, with a properly professional events team rather than a DIY feel. You can trust the day to staff who know exactly what they're doing, and that easiness shows up in how the whole thing flows.

Practical things worth knowing

Access runs from lunchtime the day before to lunchtime the day after - generous by most venues' standards, and it changes the feel of the day. There's time to set up properly without rushing, and time afterwards to decompress rather than packing the car at dawn.

The small touches matter here. During a recent wedding, staff set up a TV in the covered courtyard so guests who wanted to catch a rugby match could do it properly, rather than huddling round someone's phone. Baskets of white fleece blankets appear if it turns chilly. It's the kind of attentiveness that makes a day feel genuinely looked after.
