This photo was taken in Louise's childhood swimming pool. Bit the worse for wear now, and the feet got a bit dirty, but loved how personal a spot it was. Suited their look perfectly too.

Jenny's dad's beat-up old woodshed. Sometimes I get funny looks for the not very pretty places I bring people for portraits - but most people end up really liking the result.

Love Sarah's natural looking skin in this. Too much fake tan is the bane of photographers' lives! Balancing skin tones with a pale and interesting partner, or even pale hands with super tanned faces - not fun!

I love this documentary moment. Great moments don't happen every second so you need to be patient. It's important to give your photographer space and time to do this rather than cramming the schedule full of formal family photos. That is, if you're expecting real documentary images from them (some people obviously want formals instead).

This is just a natural moment between Yaili & Nicklas. Some people aren't into wedding portraits per se - but if you give your photographer some time, just to go for a walk and hang out, you can get some great really natural shots.

Access all areas. Sometimes the most memorable photos are taken in the unlikeliest of spaces. We call this one 'toilet-hug' in our house! I always take better photos when the couple let's me have a backstage pass to their day (some people don't want you backstage - feels too private etc. but the photos aren't the same).

It's always a good idea to make sure you get on well with you photographer/your couples. People with similar taste. This is Dave cracking up laughing during the portraits - which ended up looking really natural as a result.

Just a classic groom/aisle shot. Made all the better because there aren't ten people hanging out of the pews with iPads and phones obscuring the action, Some photographers like to have 'unplugged' ie. technology-free -  ceremonies. I wouldn't go that far, but there's no denying it messes up otherwise lovely photos on a regular basis!

Looks like a model, but this is just a real bride who loved photography and was really up for experimenting. This is the kind of image someone might pin, and then send a pinterest board asking that they have a similar kind of image. But it's very difficult to re-create something like this. It's much better if people just let their own day unfold naturally and have their own unique images.

Love it when people get their families involved. This is Mark's brother , who is a Buddhist priest, blessing him before the ceremony.

It doesn't cost as much as you might think, on top of normal rates, to get a home-grown photographer to come with you for a wedding abroad. Photography styles in France, Italy, Spain etc. can be a bit different to here.  If you find a photographer whose work you love don't be afraid to ask them to travel. You often save so much on food etc. by marrying abroad that there might be more left in the budget for photography anyway.

Close up ceremony shot. There's nothing worse than getting to a ceremony venue - usually a church - to be told that you have to stand at the back, or worse still, can't come in at all. It's always a good idea for couples to check that photography is allowed in ceremony venues and try to negotiate for as much access as possible.

If couples like kind of 'wow' images, especially ones with interesting lighting, perhaps at night, you have to give your photographer room to experiment. Dave & Dee here are wedding photographers themselves and didn't bat an eyelid when i asked them to stand in the pitch black night, running around with tripods and lights, trying to make the image work. It took about 5 minutes to get the shot.

An American couple eloping on an Irish mountain. They had never been to Ireland before, but got in touch with us and we came up with this idea together. So if people are planning to get married far fro home, it's often a plan to get a photographer involved with the process, as they'll have good local knowledge and contacts.

Esther and Michael hanging out in their flat before the day kicks off. It's always music to my ears when I hear a couple is getting ready together, or hanging out together the morning of the wedding. Makes for a super relaxed day. Love taking photos of couple together before the ceremony too.

Ceremony in the Ulster Hall, a pitch black space with crazy lighting. I had no forewarning of this fact and had to respond really quickly, adjusting the way I normally shoot. Was really happy with the way things turned out. But the next time I shot here, we thoroughly discussed the lighting situation! Have shot ceremonies in all types of spaces - using candle light to noon-day sun. It's always a good idea for the couple to think through the lighting situation of the ceremony, as photographers can often only work with what they're given - darkness and squinting included!

A ceremony on a beach in Donegal. Love it when couples go for non-typical wedding spaces. It's always a gamble with the weather, but fortune favours the brave and I have hardly ever had an outdoor wedding ceremony get rained off. Maybe once. A lot of people do the official paperwork a day or two beforehand, which gives them total freedom to get hitched wherever they want.

Allan is a zoo-keeper. They had an animal themed wedding and had a friend bring his owls. Love it when couples' bring their own personalities, interests, even jobs into their wedding. This isn't a typical weddingy photo, but there's something about it. Wouldn't have been possible if these guys weren't up for taking the risk.

The best photo-spots are usually off the beaten path. Wear flats, runners, or even wellies to get there and for ease of movement. Most dresses hide your shoes anyway.

Do not forget to party! Couples can spend so much time worrying about the details. But photography-wise, if people are having a blast and properly let their hair down, it makes for great images.

This isn't a 'Photo Booth'. we don't do this - not really our thing - although a totally valid way of getting a party going! All these props were lying around the venue (Maunsel House in Somerset) and I loved how people just picked things up and started messing around with them. Worked really well for photos.
